We had the chance to meet the 4 guys from Numero 83 during Kiirarock 2014 in Tampere. If you always wanted to know ,how a typical rehearsal looks like or why they started to make music, here you find the answers and much more!
Do you want to tell us, how your band name has been generated? And what he means? Or is it a secret?
Masi: At first Numero 83 was a cover band. We played for a guy called Kantti Janne, who was a candidate for the election for Hämeenkyrö district and his number was 83 (Nro.83).After many months, Vesku and Juke started to play together and Vesku just kept the name.
During your band history your writing of your name changed couple of times. What was the reason?
Vesku: The record company.
Was there another reason than the record company?
Niko: We changed the name once by ourselves. From Nro.83 to Numero Kasikolme.
Why did you change it?
Juke: It looks better. We were making the cover for our “Velipoika” EP and we couldn’t make it look good with it.
Masi: We thought a lot about- How would a person write it down?- What is the most logic way? I think Numero 83 is good.
You signed your first record deal last year with Kaiku Entertainment. How did it come to it?
J: Vesku was in Amadeus and having a beer. And that’s where it started. (Laughing) That is where all good things start in life. (All laughing) Vesku was there with a friend having a beer and at the same table, there was a guy who sells gigs to Kaiku. They were like: “Have you heard about our band?” And Jani , the guy from Kaiku Entertainment, liked our stuff and showed it to the other guys. They liked it too and that’s how it started.
How did it feel to sign a record deal?
M: I think, quite calm because they weren’t the first who want to sign us. Actually, they were the third ones. From the beginning, we kept our feet on the ground.
Any plans for your first debut record?
J: Hopefully we will be going soon to record some songs. Actually, we will have a meeting with Kaiku next week. I think we will set up some dates hopefully for the studio. So maybe at summer or fall.
You already have published two EPs. And “Velipoika” from the 2nd EP was played already in the Finnish radio. How did you feel about that and where did you get the information from?
J: When we got the EP from the pressing, we send the EP to quite a lot of radio stations. We didn’t get any notification from Ylex that they play our song. We have been sending those two months earlier. One morning actually Jason (Lovex) sent me a text message: "I am listening to Ylex and they gonna play your song in about half an hour." We didn’t even have the chance to write it in Facebook because we didn’t know it.
Where do you get the inspiration for your songs?
V: From life.
What do you think about foreign fans who can even sing your songs along in Finnish?
J: Do they have a clue about, what we are singing?
I don’t know. Some do. Some don’t. But they are always keen on knowing what you are actually singing about. They are asking for translations or translate those by themselves.
J: But if they like the music?! I listen to some bands from Norway or Iceland that singing their own language. And I don’t have any clue what they are singing about, but they are good bands. Maybe it is better that I don’t know .
Do you have plans to record something in English sometime?
J: I don’t think so. We are doing it the “Rammstein “-way and rule the world in Finnish.
How does a typical rehearsal look like?
N: Messy.
J: Usually, we play naked and just admire each other bodies. Play our asses off. (All laughing) We dim the lights.
N: It is a typical Tuesday for us.
And how do you all manage in a small rehearsal room?
J: We are doing just fine. Thanks for asking! (Laughing)
What instruments can you play and which one do you prefer?
J: I play a little drums and guitar. I am not really good in anything else. At home I play a bit keyboard but I am really lousy in that.
So do you prefer drums or guitar?
J: Hmmm… I have to say guitar.
V: Guitar, table drums, harmonica, mandolin and a bit piano.
Which do you prefer?
V: Table drums.
N: I play guitar, bass and I used to play drums. But I haven’t played in many years. I prefer the guitar, maybe. But the bass is good too, it’s different.
M: I play drums. (Laughing) With sticks and without. (Laughing)
Do you have any rituals before a show? Which ones?
M: I usually slaughter pigs behind my house. (All laughing)
J: We try to relax. We put, before every gig, the hands on top of each other and throw them into the air.
What kind of music or songs did your parents “torture” you? Or did you like that songs/music and still listen to those?
J: In my home, there was quite a lot of music going on . My sisters play piano and guitar, my parents also play. And I have been listening them playing. My father has a lot of records like "The Beatles" and "Pink Floyd", stuff like that. When I was in high school, I started to get interested in what’s going on in the music field. There were all those albums from "The Beatles" and from there I started to search for older music. I still like those nowadays.
M: My father listened to Blues quite a lot, well everything from that. And also bands from Finland. I still like it nowadays.
N: My parents listen to “Iskelmä”(Finnish folklore). I never liked it. I guess that my older brother got me into music.
V: My parents listen to “Iskelmä”, ABBA and Classic. I still like it.
Was there a special moment that influenced you to make music? Which ones?
M: I was 13, when I first joined a band in Hämeenkyrö. A typical day was like: we went from school to our place, we had coffee, we went to our rehearsal and came back at night.
N: I guess, I just saw some rock star when I was a kid. Since I was a little kid, I dreamt of doing music for a living.
J: Well, my big brother also plays. He is 7 years older than me. So when we were still living in Ikaalinen in the same house, he had a drum kit there. I was something like 9 years old and I remember that I went and play the drums, after I heard my brother played them really nicely and loudly. That was so impressive that I wanted to play it by myself also. Since ever, I played the drums because we had a drum kit at home.
V: When I saw Bon Jovi in TV.
J: In 2009. (All laughing)
When did you start making music?
M: With 13.
N: With 8/9.
J: With 9.
V: With 8. My first instrument was the bass.
Your "famous last words" to your fans out there. :D
M: Eat your cabbage. (All laughing)
V: My brain is frozen! (All laughing) And: Everybody needs somebody.
Thank you very much guys for taking time for this interview.
