We had the chance to meet the guys from Idiomatic at Kiirarock 2015. You always wanted to know , where the band name came from or what they doing before a gig? The answer to those and other questions can be found here.

How did you come up with your band name? And what does Idiomatic mean? Is it literally?

Sasja: First word from a dictionary.

Sami: So actually it was idiom. And then idiomatic.

Is it literally?

Sas: No. It’s just a band name

Describe your music in 3 words.

Joonathan: Pretty lame pop… (all laughing)

Sam: I think we go with that! (all laughing) Melancholic…

Sas: Atmospheric

Sam: Big

How did you meet? And how did you form your band?

Sas: We are friends (Joonathan and Sasja) since childhood. And we had some bands.

J: Me and the former bass player were friends.

Sas: And then we just met in some party and decided to make a new band.

You are existing now like 8 years. How does your song writing process changed?

Sas: Yes a lot of times. We write better songs nowadays.

J: We maybe think more about the song writing. We think more when we play.

Sa: We don’t have just bold fun. We are putting some mind into the songs and music also.

J: Sometimes we have to rehearse to write a song.

Your debut album was released almost 3 years ago. You also released 2 new songs “Old River” and “Heart Hotel”. Are you planning a new full length record?

Sas: When we get some money.

Sa: We have 30 songs in the making.

Sas: We have a full album of songs coming when we get the money.

You have been playing a lot of gigs during your band history. You have been also for 3 shows in Germany. Is there a significant difference between those gigs and the Finnish gigs?

J: When we played, people came to see us.

Sa: They came to see us although have never seen us before.

Sas: Especially in Chemnitz, because it is the friendship town of Tampere.

Sa: And in Berlin also.

Sas: And they knew the words.

J: The people came to you like: “You guys are awesome.”

Sa: And after the gig they went to Facebook and liked our page.

What was the weirdest location you had a gig?

Sas: Haulitorni, you know the red tower in Pispala.

Really?

Sas: Yes it was an acoustic show.

Sa: The audience was downstairs. And there was this tube that was our microphone. So we sang into that hole.

Sas: It is a old tower , where they used to make bullets.

Do you have any rituals before a show? Which one?

Sa: Stretching, stretching, stretching.

J: Relax. Usually when we have a gig in Tampere, I just wanna go home and relax. (All agree)

Your music style is a mixture of rock/pop but also with big melodies. What is the idea behind it?

Sas: There should be always a mood or feeling. And we go with that.

Sa:If it gets serious, we start to play something that never has been done before.

J: And we all listen to different kind of music. And at the rehearsal, we make something good although we maybe not listen to that kind of music.

Where do you get your inspiration for your songs?

Sas: From heart breaks.

J: Break ups. Just the normal…

Women!

Sas: Yes women. (All laughing)

J: Everyday life.

Sas: Not only everyday life. Big feelings form everyday life. Weekends.

How did the dynamics of the band changed after the change of your drummer?

Sas: In a good way. I have the feeling that we are playing as a band.

Sa: The bassist changed also.

J : Now we have a rhythm.

What do you think was the reason for your success?

Sa: We are friends. And we want to do it.

Sas: When we are getting tired, we take a break. We can’t take too much break. And after that we can see our faces again.

How do you see the music business in 10 years?

Sas: We are making electronic music in 10 years.

What song would you like to cover?

Sas: Something from The Doors.

J: really?

Sa: Some years ago, we almost done the song “Maneater” from Daryl Hall& John Oates.

Sas: Something from The Doors!

What is your favorite song from the 80’s?

Sa: “Living on the prayer “from Bon Jovi

Juke: “Drive” by The Cars

Sa: Joonathan’s “Papa don’t preach”

J: Pretty good.

Sas: Something from Queen.
